  1. The mind boggles,Live,Neutral ,And earth.

  2. Brown - Live

    Blue - Neutral

    Yellow and Green - Earth

  3. Live= Red or Brown Wire.

Neutral = Blue or Black Wire.

    Earth= Green Wire.

Please do not tamper with anything that has a mains power cord in it? Please!!

  4. Live (Brown sheath)- Provides the current to the outlet.

Earth (Green/Yellow Sheath) -  Used if there is a fault, it takes all the fault current.

Neutral (Blue Sheath) - Provides the return path for Current to Earth.

Correct me If I'm wrong please.

  5. The names are Live (also called phase), Neutral and Earth.

Live provides a path for current from generator to the device.

Neutral wire provides a return path for current from appliance to the generator and thus completes the circuit.

In a completed circuit neutral carries same current as the live only the direction is different.

Earth wire does not carry current under normal conditions.

But if some fault occurs and current comes in the body of appliance then earth wire caries it to ground and prevents possibility of shock.

  6. Live, Neutral, and Earth.

  7. Hi,

Live > Brown (used to be red on older things)

Neutral > Blue (used to be black)

Earth > Now Green with a yellow stripe (used to be just green)

EU regs > here we go again !

A circuit is made by passing current through a device, and to get all technical, the electron flow travels fron the higher tension "live" conducutor back through the "neutral", thus spinning your meter.

The earth is an important safety feature, in that without it, a washing machine could have a live frame without tripping a breaker, for example.

Your neutral to earth voltage should be checked, as it looks at how good the earth connection back to your local sub-station is.

Live to neutral should ideally be 240V, but they are allowed 10% either way.

In plugs, all you do is remember that the live goes through the internal fuse, the earth is the big pin, which leaves no alternative for the neutral

Gods, I am supposed to be a power engineer, so wait until you get onto five big different coloured cables

Sounds simplistic, but folks do get it wrong

    Bang !
