I know about autumnal and vernal equinoxes, but what about the other ones?

  1. Equinox means "equal night" - i.e. the day and night are the same length. This only happens twice a year, when the sun is overhead the equator - the autumnal and vernal equinoxes.

When the sun is at its extremes, you get the solstices - "sun stops". This is where the night is as long (or as short) as possible.

I don't think rushing to judge Roger was helpful. He isn't confused; he just isn't clear - he correctly points out that there are only two equinoxes, and makes the point that the other two significant seasonal dates are solstices.

  2. Oh boy oh boy is Roger confused!  There are two, in spring and fall, and they are the VERNAL and AUTUMNAL, respectively.

  3. There are only two. The other two are the winter and summer solstaces.

  4. There are two equinoxes: The spring equinox and the fall equinox!
