  1. The best known is the fatuous Marie Antoinette - on learning that the poor could not afford bread, she said they should eat cake.

Losing such an empty head can't have made much of a difference.

  2. Eleanor of Aquitaine - married and divorced one king of France, married Henry of Anjou, (who was her ex's rival and became King of England after Stephen), and was mother to two kings of England - Richard the Lionheart and John. She was regent for Richard and also ruled in Henry's name when he was warring on the European Continent. An amazing lady for her time, she apparently caused a bit of scandal in her youth. She also accompanied her husband on a Crusade!

    Hope that helps

  3. Blanche of Castile was regent of France to her son Louise IX during his minority (1226-1236) and later when he went on crusade she was regent again (1248-1252).  During the minority of herson she  quelled a rebellion by her nobles, riding into battle at the head of her own troops.  when the nobles tried to abduct her son, she expelled them and replaced them with commoners.  It was Blanche who was responsible for the Treaty of Paris, which ushered in an era of peace and prosperity.

Catherine de Medici was Regent of France during the minority of her son Charles, who became king at ten years old after the death of his older brother Francois. He was declared of age when he was thirteen, in 1563, but he remained under his mother's domination for the rest of his life. Her greatest problem was the animosity between Catholics and Hugeonots (Protestants).  Her Edict of Toleration (1562) was aimed at alleviating this.  In 1562 the first of the Wars of Religion erupted in France, and Catherine presided over three civil wars in a decade.  She is credited with inducing Charles to order the Saint Bartholomews Massacre in 1572, in which nearly all the leading Huguenots in Paris were killed.  After the death of Charles in 1573 her third son Henry became King, and she took a less dominant role in his reign.

Catherine's daughter Marguerite de Valois married the King of Navarre, Henri, who eventually became King Henri IV of France.  Marguerite was famous for her beauty, learning, and licentiousness.  She and Henri had no children, and in 1599 their marriage was dissolved by the Pope so that Henri could marry Marie de Medicis.

Marie de Medicis was regent of France for her son Louis XIII during his minority.  In 1612 she became governor of Normandy as well, a post she held until 1619.  She continued to rule France even after Louis came of age in 1614.  She was  banished in 1619 to Blois, but she escaped and after the death of the king's favourite in 1621, she and her ally Cardinal Richelieu gained control of affairs.  In 1631 Louis banished her again.

Marie Antoinette was the wife of King Louis XVI.  In their reign the French REvolution occured.  It is true that marie Antoinette was frivolous and extravagent, but it is not true that she spent all of France's money (as a comment above suggests).  In fact, personal expenditure by the royal family only accounted for a tiny fraction of state expenses.  marie Antoinette and Louis were actually both sympathetic to the plight of the poor, but when Louis tried to introduce a fairer tax system, in which nobles would pay taxes as well, his plans were rejected by the nobility.  After the Revolution, Louis and Marie Antoinette continued as constitutional monarchs for a while, but eventually they were deposed and imprisoned.  Both of them were executed in 1793.

  4. Marie Antoinette, Catherine De Medici

  5. Marie Antoinette, she spent all the money that France had, and lost her head over it.

  6. Catherine De Medici.  She kept her 4 sons, one after another on the throne of France when patently some were more than unsuitable.  She also caused 'the slaughter of the innocents' when she was behind the rabble who slaughtered thousands of protestant Huegenots.  You might be pushed to find positive things with this question!
