We want to grill some steaks on New Years Day. We are living in Germany and don't know what to look for. We are hoping for something like a filet mignon, t-bone, or just anything that is a high quality steak. What should we look for at the butcher shop?

  1. just go to the butcher

  2. "Rumpsteak"  is beef and it´s good quality

"Lende" is pork and also good quality

If you order filet it is normally the best meat you get

    Have fun and good luck

  3. Beef steaks are not so common in Germany and more then double the price in the USA.

Pork steaks are found at every butcher counter, some are even premarinated and extremely good.  Also much easier on the wallet.

For beef ask for Rinder Steaks.. T-bone is T-bone or T-knochen.

    enjoy your grill party.

  4. Tell the butcher your recipe plans for grilling, including whether or not you are going to marinate. I don't know if I would grill a filet mignon, they tend to cook too quickly and dry out. Ask about "hohruecken" which is similar to a ribeye, or an entrecote (the thick end of the filet). Be sure to ask whether the meat has been aged and specify whether you are gas or coal grilling.  A quality butcher cares about his product and can offer all kinds of tips and suggestions.

  5. Rumpsteak is a good cut of meat.....but it's expensive. You might want to try some Schwenksteaks(pork)....they are already marinated and very tasty.

  6. Steak is German is still Steak :)

Just ask for "Steak von Bester Qualitaet" and he will give you a nice cut

(das) Filet in German means sirloin, so that might help you, too
