Most of Gates wealth is tied up in MSFT stock and options, which he has been liquidating for several years.

He is smart, he would not keep a ton of money in a single checking account. Monies would be deposited in every major bank, brokerage firm (US and International institutions) and located in trust(s), etc.

Most of his wealth is still in Microsoft stock not in cash. What he does have in cash though is likely in multiple banks and/or money market funds to reduce risk and provide a greater return. The FDIC insured limit is only $100K per bank and he likely has much more than that in cash.
