If orange is associated with a religion, then which is linked to the Irish Republican Army? I know for St. Patricks day that it is the non-religious that are given to celebration in parts of the world where it is a good reason for excessive merriment. Those claim their color to be green and actually cause brawls if any wear orange - at least that was the respect from tradition.

  1. Orange is Protestant, I guess the Green is Catholic.

  2. Green is the traditional colour of Ireland so it represents the Nationalists.

Orange comes from the Dutch royal family and is associated with Unionists.

The white between them on the Irish flag represents peace.

    Have a good one!

  3. Green has always been a colour that has represented ireland as its green. The orange is for the prodestants i suppose but mainly for the ones that like to march. they march to celebrate king billys win at the battle of the boyne. they wear orange sashes. Some trrouble sometimes happens when orange men want to march through nationalist areas. this has resulted in many riots in the north over the years. the colours do not really have anything to do with the troubles as such in the north theese have involved the IRA who were against the british rule. and the oposing side as such would be the unionists who want british rule.

  4. there are many names to use, most would say nationalist  is green and loyalist is orange, because the loyalists are happy to be under british rule ( don't ask me why, even the english don't like british rule at the moment hahahah)

you can also say republicans are green and the usual way people categorise it is the basic religious differences, orange for protestants and green for catholics

  5. the 2 colours largely come from the Battle of the Boyne in 1690.

During that battle (which was part of a wider war between catholics and protestant kingdoms accross Europe) King William of Orange (protestant king of Holland) beat King James - Green (Catholic ex king of England).

    Hence the 2 colours.

Just to let you know, the irish Tricolour is made up of equal parts Green and Orange, with the white centre representing peace between Catholics and Protestants

  6. Green is associated with the Nationalists who generally were Catholic and lived in the south of Ireland

Orange is associated with the Unionists who generally were Protestant and lived in the north of Ireland
