I've been a vegi for maybe a month and I think that it's caused me to get really numb-like head aches on my head, face, upper back, and other parts of my body!

Is it anemia caused by not getting enough iron???

Should i just start taking iron supplements.

I feel weak, tired, and my face & head is getting numb!!

  1. It can cause Anemia, Lack of protein, lack of brain coorperation. And you may be a little slow to respond when you start out.

However I am a vegetarian, and I use peas to substitute for my protein. And I use prescribed pills to substitute my iron.

There are so many good effects of it though. Like you're saving the environment, and animals. You are also keeping yourself a little safer than others from getting cancer!

           PS. Vegetarianism rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Vegetarianism shouldn't have any negative side effects if done correctly. If you don't eat right, you will be vitamin deficient and that could be bad. I suggest taking a multivitamin in your case because it sounds like you aren't getting all your vitamins.

  3. iv been a vegetarian for 4 months now and iv never felt dizzy i feel great and better

  4. You might want to get a blood test done or something.. Being a vegetarian shouldn't cause you to become anemic. There is plenty of iron in beans and leafy greens.. I'm a vegan and my iron is fine. Maybe you're not eating the right foods but my guess is that its not your diet, its something else.. Stress maybe? Or too much caffeine or bad chemicals or something..

    Hope you feel better.

OH.. and if you choose to take a multi vitamin, you need to be careful because often in vitamins, iron, calcium, and zinc are all in one pill. Iron and calcium and Iron and zinc cancel each other out when taken together, so its pointless to take them together. So you'll probably need to take them at different times of the day.

  5. I feel for you...when I started being a vegetarian I didn't do it right!

I agree with the first answer, start taking a multi vitamin and you should see a doctor. This doesn't mean that you need to stop...just do it safer and better!

  6. That sounds like a likely problem, at least if you're not eating the right stuff. There are SOME people who have trouble absorbing iron from non-meat sources, and therefore should take supplements, but you can likely just eat better. Dark green veggies are usually a good source of iron, as are many nuts. Many cereals are fortified with iron, too, which would work. 1 serving of rice chex, for example, has like 50% or daily iron requirement. Cheerios are almost as high, and I believe banana nut crunch has like 90%. I'm pretty sure total has a lot, also. That's just a few, and you can probably find others that are full, too.
