  1. poor performance, ac wont last as long, higher electric bills. Harder the

ac has to work more energy it has to pull, but honesty changing the  filter is about as hard as changing a light bulb. Good luck with it

  2. Dirty filters effect the efficiency and the life span of a/c units.  If the filter is dirty, it takes more energy to push the air through it so the unit consumes more electricity.

If the unit is continually working harder to push air through the dirty filter it wil wear out sooner as well.

  3. If the filter gets dirty enough it will decrease airflow over the indoor coil causing it to freeze (this will decrease airflow even more and it won't cool the house).  A dirty filter will also make the indoor fan motor work harder then it is supposed to causing it to go bad  It will also cause liquid refrigerant to go back to the compressor causing it to go bad. Thawing out the frozen coil will create a lot of water and can ruin things around the unit when the water gets all over the floor.  All of the repairs can cost a lot of money and can be avoided by changing the filter regularly.

  4. The only reason for a filter in an a/c is to keep all that junk from making it's way to the coil and freezing it up,slugging the compressor, and clogging the drain. An in place coil cleaning is possible if it's not real bad although if it's really matted up,the coil will have to be pulled, cleaned, and reinstalled.I have never done that for less than 400 bucks.

Regular filter changes beats an expensive coil cleaning any day not to mention the down time and slugging the compressor with liquid refrigerant which will wash out the oil and destroy the compressor.Hope that helped.

  5. As the other 2 answers indicate, the efficiency and life span of the unit is compromised. In addition, there are dust and pollen particles stuck in there and when they are dirty, they are noisier with the wind noise.
