Question:

What are the nets for on the foul poles at Turner field?

On the foul poles at the baseball stadium Turner field, there are nets inbetween the main pole and another small pole about maybe 1 foot apart. What is the purpose of these nets? I can't imagine they would do any good to "deflect" a stray ball or anything. What do you guys think?

  1. Because it is sometimes difficult for umpires to judge whether a ball hit near the foul pole is fair or foul, the nets extend the width of the foul pole allowing them to judge better whether balls are foul or home runs, without obstructing the view of the fans behind.

Any ball that hits the net is considered a home run.
