Mainstream auto manufacturers are slow to respond to the market; they are designed for mass production, not for innovation.  Smaller companies around the world are developing numerous alterative technologies but there are problems associated with new technologies (access to alternative fuels being just one).

Companies like ZAP and Aptera are on the forefront of electric cars.  Check out their sites for more information.  There are also cars designed to run on everything from H2 powered fuel cells to compressed gas.

The technology is out there, but it is in its infancy.
