My schoolage son is left-handed. My toddler uses both hands right now, but she seems to be favoring her left for things like eating and drawing. ((My husband and I are both right-handed.)) What are the odds of both of them being lefties?

  1. 50/50?

  2. I'm not sure what the odds are but  i have 2 children who are very good at using both hands for different things examples: my daughter eats with her left hand and colors with her right . She also brushes her teeth with her right hand  throws a ball with her left. My son does almost everthing withhis left hand except throwing and swinging a bat or club and eating

  3. Well in my family i'm left handed and so is my little sister. So its not that odd to us at all. Who knows if she will be a lefty. My cousin used to eat and grab things with her right hand but ended up be a lefty like me. The important thing is to not force her to choose a side let her just be what she choses to be a lefty or a righty.

  4. I can't be sure what your genes mean, but statiscally speaking 10% of kids are left-handed. So to have 2 would be a 1/100 shot more or less. Why the question?

  5. I don't know what the odds are.  Both my parents are right handed, but 2 out of three of us offspring are lefties.

Lefties tend to be more creative & linguistically gifted.

Left handed girls may be near genius in language and creative areas, but struggle some with math.  A left handed male, however, may be  especially gifted across the board, due to the strengths of being male, combined with the strengths of being left handed uniquely equipping them in this way.  Perhaps that is why King David of ancient times had a special "A Team" of left handed soldiers. ;-D

Do some research on "right brain / left brain dominance" and you will get some idea of what I'm talking about.  I've found it to be pretty accurate in my own life, and the people I know.  Of course, each person's intelligence differs, but their relative strengths and weaknesses seem to line up fairly well with what I've learned of left brain/right brain studies.

Have fun raising your lefties.  God made them that way on purpose!  They may be less organized than you are, but what they have to offer can be incredible.  So, be patient, and gently teach them the skills they may overlook.  What comes naturally to you, the areas of time management and organization may be totally "Greek" to them.  They may be looking at the "big picture" and missing the details.  If you understand this, you will be able to help them w/o frustrating them and yourself in the process.

Over time, they will begin to notice patterns, details, etc. but when it comes to personal organization, they will have to work at it and always wish they had a secretary to free them up for the more creative pursuits!  They tend to be leaders or loners, not usually great team players.  This is not necessarily bad.  Lefties make great contributions in areas that call for persistent focus ... though not in the areas where you try to put them in a box.  They will more likely to be Van Goghs, Thomas Edisons or Einsteins than air traffic controllers or librarians.  They want to chart their own course, not connect the dots someone else has plotted for them.

Pray for wisdom.  You've been entrusted with something special.  Righties organize the world and run the show.  Sometimes, they reject and persecute the lefties.  Sadly, this brings on grief and wasted lives.  If you know how to support your lefties, you'll have a gift to present to the world, 2 young people you can be proud of!

    God bless you,

    Fairelight

  6. I'm one of three brothers and two of us are ambidextrous, so I don't think it strange.

  7. i'm a lefty and my sister uses both her hands . its whatever feels natural thats right. whats the big deal about lefties and righties anyway?

  8. Possible the same odds as my sister and I coming out lefties with two righty parents.

Look for these characteristics in your family tree:

left-handedness, skin conditions (psoraisis, eczema, etc), ability with languages, twins

These are all somehow connected, as they tend to show up in groups. I'm a lefty with psoraisis who is pretty darn good at learning languages and I have twins in my family history.
