Hi everyone! I'm 16 and I've been looking for a job, but I'm about to kick it into high gear! I would love to work in retail, somewhere like aero or american eagle. I shop at these places and love their clothes along with the environment. The thing is i have zero job experience. Now don't get me wrong i don't sit on my butt all day, i've done things like baby-sitting. I don't know how to phrase it on my application so that it doesn't appear to whoever is reading it that i made it up or whatever. I feel like my lack of job experience has been hindering me, as i have applied for other jobs and gotten no call backs. I know i would be a great candidate if just given a chance! What should i do in regards to this? Should i leave the past employment empty and hope they give me the time of day, or should i put down the things i have done, such as baby-sitting? If you feel i should put them down, how should i go about phrasing it?

  1. I would suggest working at Mc Donalds for a year so that you have some experience.

  2. you should do some volunteer work. you can put that on your resume. i've never had a job either, but i've done lots of unpaid work experience at clothing stores and festivals and stuff like that.

you shouldn't put babysitting down. it should all be formal experience.

  3. As far as putting on your resume, you should include your previous work experience, or at least I would - more is better when it comes to a resume, even if babysitting seems unrelated. To write the resume make a section entitled "Work Experience" and list who and where you babysat. List how long you did it - for example "Joe Smith, 123 Main Street, July 1 2008-August 1 2008, Weekends only from 6 pm to 8pm."

However, the best solution would be for you to at least put down three references from your babysitting experience so the potential employers can call and verify what a good candidate you are for their job offering - Employers love to know if you are a hard worker and they do check their references.

  4. prob. wont get a job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
