A quiet area can have lil couches and lots of soft pillows.  THe area should not be in a high traffic area nor around loud boisterous areas.  Have calming activities in the area like books, puzzles, tape player and headset, fabric board.  Remind children that the area is for quiet play, so no jumping or yelling.  I personally like to group time in my quiet area--less distraction and its calming.  Obviously, the social interaction depends on you.  You can curl up with the kids and read books or sing songs.  For privacy, you can create a cubby hole type spot--maybe with a box.  I once used a barrel: i painted the outside to looks like a tree trunk, cut a huge hole in the side and lines the inside with faux fur fabric and tossed in a pillow.  Perfect for a lil body to hide in, but with a big enough hole that i can see in.
