My mom and dad are in their 80's living in their own home right now, but as they get older it is beginning to get very hard for my mom to take care of my dad. In fact my moms life has become a living h**l. I want to get them out of this situation but am hardly making it financially myself. We live near Houston, Texas is there a place for them in this area?

  1. well the best place for anyone in that situation will always be with family ... only like one in a thousand old people homes are actually good for the person, and the rest no matter how well kept they are will most likely be a drag on their spirit. You not having good finances doesn't mean you can't work out a way for them to live with you and hire some one to visit while also sharing responsibilities among your family. You won't regret that you did. Combine finances and work something out .... because social security won't buy you very good care, in all honesty ...

  2. There are nursing homes or assisted living homes where both your parents can stay together.  Medicare will pay the cost and it is up to you to find an assisted living home that has Medicare rooms available.  There is Hearthstone in Lake Jackson that is a lovely place.  They have little apartment style rooms and both your parents can stay together and also have the help he needs.

There is also Carriage Inn in Lake Jackson that is nice.  If your parents can sell their home that might give them enough money to start with as assisted living environment and when that money runs out allot of times the establishment will transfer over to Medicare.  Hope that helps.  Been there and it is a job to do.

  3. If they meet the requirements for SSI they will qualify  for help through Medicaid and programs that provide home care as well as institutional care.

My parent were in a simular situtation and we got meals on wheels and my sister lived nearby and cleaned for them as well  as drove them shopping etc. This gave them enough help for them to stay in there home for several more years. Most people are very reluctant to leave their homes for institutional care, and sometimes a little help can make a big difference.
