  2. Well I know that there's actually much debate on when the British Monarchy started. We say it started in 1066 with William the Conqueror (which would actually make the British monarchy less than 1,000 years old) but some believe it started in the 800s with Alfred the Great, and even before that a less unified Britain and Ireland was full of celtic tribes with their own kings and queens such as Boudica.

    Of course Britain did try a republic back in the 1600s for 20 years with the beheading of then King Charles.
