I was discussing this with a group of people earlier and they swore it originated hundreds of years ago. They say it meant that when someone married down or below were they were socially they would put the wedding ring on the other persons left hand. I thought that was were it went regardless? But that still doesnt really explain what it means? Does it mean that you are mocking someone or making fun?

  1. I understand it as saying something complimentary in a back-handed, devious way. It could also be interpreted as a veiled criticism at the same time.

  2. a left handed compliment is not blatantly said but sort of suggested after reflection;
