  1. It is Italian, possibly from the Lombardi region.


  2. I confirm what Joyce B says : It is Italian. Meanwhile it is not from Lombardia (the region of Milan) but fro a very narrow area in Veneto region (the region of Venice) bordering with Trentino region

    To be precise is mainly from the little town of Schio in Vicenza province, where most of the 135 remaining family in Italy resides.

    The Etymology is uncertain : could be from a late middle age dialectal  latinidentification of the job as the man maintaining/repairing roads.

    Others say it can be a derivation of ruatus (no more used) identifying people coming from area of abandoned former Roman military camps ( castrum ruatum ), Finally, others trace it to the family Ruer , an ancient German family who arrived in Italy following Otto around year 1000 and settled in the nearby province of Treviso
