I am thinking about taking a job offshore. However, I was in the Navy for 10 years, 5 of which are at sea duty.

I am wondering what the major dangers are to my personal safety working offshore. It the danger based in people not paying attention or is there a serious risk of dying even if you are attentive to detail?

  1. My biggest fear would falling off of the rig.

  2. If you are going to be working on a platform, there is also "hidden" dangers. There is electrical hazards, chemical hazards (H2S) fires, Hyper and Hypothermia. I would contact someone like Total Safety, who supplies safety personel to these platforms around the world. You could get some facts from them.. good luck!

  3. Very hard physical labor.

Most of the work is outside regardless of the weather.

It's pretty hard on the body, so while you might run into a lot of guys in their 20s and 30s, you won't see many people still working into their 40s.

    Hurricanes.

Extended time away from families and friends is one of the biggest strains.

    Boredom.

Other people not doing their jobs.
