I know they are all tropical storms with similar characteristics... but what classifies each one?

  3. A cyclone is an area of low atmospheric pressure characterized by inward spiralling winds that rotate counter clockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern hemisphere of the Earth.

    A tropical cyclone is a storm system characterized by a low pressure center and numerous thunderstorms that produce strong winds and flooding rain. Depending on their location and strength, tropical cyclones are referred to by other names, such as hurricane, typhoon, tropical storm, cyclonic storm, tropical depression and simply cyclone.Hurricane & typhoon are basically same in their effect but they vary in name by different  people.Americans & Europeans call them Hurricane whereas Japanese,Taiwanies,Vietnamies call the Typhoon

    Hurricane is a big Atlantic cyclone.

    Typhoon is a big Pacific cyclone.
