  1. The Nipa hut (bahay-kubo) is considered as the national house of the Philippines. It is, as the name implies, a hut, raised a few feet above the ground and constructed out of bamboo tied together, with a thatched roof using dried grass.

Typical Bahay KuboNipa huts were once the original houses of the Philippines before the Spanish arrived and is still used as a domicile today, especially in rural areas. Different architectural designs are present among the different ethno-linguistic groups in the country, although all of them conform to being stilt houses, similar to those found in neighboring countries such as Indonesia or Malaysia.

An advantage of this sort of architecture is that it provides basic shelter from the most available and inexpensive of materials, and works well as protection against the average wind or rainfall, aside from providing good ventilation. However, the downside to these houses is that they are not stable enough to withstand the gale-force winds during the typhoons that ravage the country every year.

These huts are iconic symbols of what a house is in the country, the countryside, and as a part of the most recognized symbol of the concept of bayanihan. The usage of the nipa hut as a device to refer to bayanihan came from from the fact that moving the hut on two large poles requires a lot of people, includung the neighbors, thus demonstrating the spirit of bayanihan.

Bayanihan is a Filipino term taken from the word bayan, referring to a nation, town or community. The whole term bayanihan refers to a spirit of communal unity or effort to achieve a particular objective.

The origin of the term bayanihan can be traced from a common tradition in Philippine towns where community members volunteer to help a family move to a new place. The process involves literally carrying the house to its new location. This is done by putting bamboo poles forming a strong frame to lift the stilts from the ground and carrying the whole house with the men positioned at the ends of each pole. A mural by Filipino National Artist Carlos "Botong" Francisco and painting by Joselito E. Barcelona illustrates the whole process. The tradition also features a small fiesta hosted by the family to express gratitude to the volunteers.

In society, bayanihan has also been adopted as a term to refer to a local civil effort to resolve national issues.

In teamwork, one of the first groups to use the term is a world acclaimed dance group (Bayanihan Dance Company) which travels different countries to perform the various traditional folk dances of the country with the objective of promoting Philippine culture.
