What are the players debating about on and off the fairways?
Be it on the fairways, the clubhouse or an ordinary get together, golfers and players alike debate on similar issues.
In what follows, some light has been shed on two most talked about issues at hand.
Usage of long-handle putters - also known as the belly putters, the long handled putters have been banned by the USGA. The ban will be put to practice from 2016.
Many golfers have spoken ill about the long putters, conveying their disapproval regarding the usage of these putters.
Tiger Woods was heard saying that the shortest bar in the bag should be similar to the dabble. Another golf pioneer, the South African professional golfer, Ernie Els said, “as prolonged as it’s legal, I’ll keep intrigue like a rest of
them”.
In professional golf, the slightest of advantages can cause a huge impact on the overall outcome. Some of the top golfers on the Tour use the belly putters.
It has also been witnessed in the past that those players who have used these putters have been highly successful in major championships.
With the announcement made by the United States Golf Association to ban the Belly putters, a massive protest was launched by the golfers who use such putters. Although no legal action has been taken by any player so far, it is certainly
a point of consideration for the association.
Players with the belly putters use the long handle to get precision in their shots. Those golfers who are against the usage of the long-handled putters say that they are a bad omen for the game.
If professional golfers do not stop using these putters, then young aspiring golfers will soon follow suit and the putters will be made standard.
Greatest golfer of all - there have been heated debates in the past over which golfer is the greatest of all. With a handful of golfers shortlisted as possible candidates, there were none more prominent than Jack Nicklaus
and Tiger Woods.
Nicklaus has won 73 central tour victories which includes 18 major championship titles. Also known was the Golden Bear, Nicklaus was a highly charismatic and prominent figure on the course during his time.
His dominance of the Professional Golf Association Tour was the talk of the day during the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s.
Tiger Woods, on the other hand, is a fairly recent phenomenon. The way he dominated the PGA Tour was unlike any other golfer in history. There was no player to match his level of golf when Woods was at the peak of his career.
With 14 major championships in the bag, and numerous titles along with them, he has penned his name in the record books.
His downfall came prior to his high profile divorce, which took a major toll on his game.
There cannot be a consensus regarding this debate because both golfers are special to the sport in their own unique ways.
