Quilting is hugely popular right now, in every style imaginable. One very popular trend is "modern quilting." This generally uses simpler, large scale piecing and modern fabric colors and prints. There's a lot of bold color, often combined with white. Check out websites of quilt designers like Bill Kerr & Weeks Ringle (Fun Quilts) and Denyse Schmidt. Also check out this Flickr group called Fresh Modern Quilts. Fun Quilts has a couple of patterns available for free on their website (as well as several for sale), and they have a book called The Modern Quilt Workshop (with an associated Flickr group) that contains many patterns.

Taking it a step (or a giant leap!) further, there are art quilts, which veer away from the traditional block style and into the anything goes area. Art quilts may be entirely textile, or they may incorporate non-fabric materials. They may be representational images, or completely abstract.
