  2. If by 'positions' you mean the different types of engineering, there are many, each with their own focus:

Mechanical (where I'm at) studies how the mechanical world operates, and tends to cover a broad range of topics, such as materials, machinery, manufacturing, gearing, heat transfer, ventilation, structures, internal combustion engines, and so on.

Electrical covers anything to do with electricity - power generation and transmission, motors, circuit design, superconductivity, signal transmission, RADAR, communications, etc.

Civil deals with large structures, like bridges, dams, buildings, airports, water treatment plants, almost anything that touches the earth.

Nuclear is more specific, touching on nuclear power plants, finding other uses for the radioactivity that comes out certain materials, and possibly weapons.

Materials engineers search for better ways to make materials that last longer, stretch better, resist corrosion, are light, cheap and easy to use, or make a material to fit a unique application (Space shuttle, athletic warm-up suits, Kevlar, etc)

Chemical engineers dive into the many liquids, solids, and gasses that make up the world and try to come up with new combinations for use in our lives. They tend to go to places like pharmecuticals (Proctor & Gamble) or refineries in the petroleum industry.

Industrial engineers are the 'efficiency and ergonomic experts' of the engineering community - they look at processes, methods of doing things, like assembly or packaging, and try to find the optimal approach for doing that task while keeping human error and discomfort to a minimum.

Aeronautical and Aerospace engineers concern themselves with propulsion systems, rockets, aircraft, spacecraft, flight, and anything that goes into the sky or space.

There are many others, and lately, some of them combine and overlap to create new types of engineers - Electromechanical, for example - an engineer who has both an electrical and mechanical background, and is ideal for anything that needs both disciplines, which is becoming a huge demand nowadays.

    Hope this helps!

  3. Well first is the sitting position where we play video games and search Ebay.

Then there is the standing position where we stand at the water cooler and talk to other engineers about video games and what we found on Ebay.

Then there is the "laying on the back" position where we find a closet or unused room to get a few hours sleep during the day to recover from being up all night playing video games.

Finally, there is the "can't sit, can't stand, can't lie down" position where we get the whole project out in the last hour before the deadline.  That is my least favorite...
