  1. There are many officials that work volleyball matches depending on the level of play.  Some low level matches only use one official.  Some only use the 2 referees and a scorekeeper.  Most formal matches have 7 officials.  They are described below.

The first referee (R1) is the referee in total charge of all of the officials.  The R1 is on the referee stand and should be about 2 feet above the net.  The R1 makes ball handling calls and starts the play by watching the serving team.  The R1 also makes back row attack and blocking calls.  The R1 is also responsible for overseeing all other calls by the other officials.

The second referees (R2) is the referee on the floor nearest the score table.  The R2 controls everything on the R2 side of the net.  That includes substitutions, time outs and line up checks.  They supervise the scorekeeping table and the benches.  They also concentrate on the area between the 3 meter lines (or 10 foot lines if you prefer) and also on the net.  They start the play watching the receiving team for positional faults.  Their primary duty during the play is to watch the net.  They can help the R1 on the ball handling calls and the ball hitting the floor or any other calls the R1 asks for.

The line judges (LJ) are in the corners.  If only 2 LJ are used, they are to the right of the R1 and to the right of the R2.  They are responsible for both lines all the way down.  They help with touch calls, in and out calls and foot faults.  They also help with antenna calls.  (The ball must pass inside the antennas.)  If 4 LJ are used, they are in each corner.  They are responsible for only one line.  The LJ to the right of the referees watch the entire sideline only.  The LJ to the left of the referees watch only the end line.  The calls are the same for touches, etc.

The scorekeeper is at the table on the R2 side of the court.  They are responsible for the official score sheet.  That score sheet takes care of the score and the substitutions.

The assistant scorekeeper is also at the scorekeeper table.  They track the Libero.  (The Libero is a defensive specialist that wears a different colored jersey and does not substitute in to the match like the other subs.  They just run on the court without permission of the R2.  That is why they need a separate tracker.)

The visible scoreboard operator controls the scoreboard.

These are the 7 main officials that work most matches.  If you get into high level matches like the Olympics has supervisors that judge everything that goes on in the match.

  2. There are two officials. Both are at the net, one on each side. One is on a ladder stand the other on the opposite side of the net on the floor.

there are also usually two spotters but not officials on opposite corners of the volleyball court acting as line judges if a ball lands in our out.

  3. on one side of court is the scorers table. Thats were the scorer keeps score, and the score sheets including rotations/substitutions. Also, if there is a libero tracker, they sit here too.

The down ref is closest to the scorers table(by the net) and their job is to ok the subs and to mirror the up ref who is on a stand at the net on the other side of the court.

They can also call people in the net. When a timeout is called they show with their hands how many timeouts each side has.

The up ref is responsible for calling any net violations they see, ball handling errors such as double hits, and motioning/whistling for the servers to serve. And determining whose point it is.

then on opposite back corners of the court you have your two line judges who call the ball in or out along the back line and the line directly in front of them.

thats it, if you need anymore clarification. let me know.
