What are the possible causes of uncertainty about identity in contemporary society?

This is the title of my next assignment for my degree course and I have no idea where to start... Any constructive thoughts as to an essay plan would be really appreciated.

TV slanting peoples view of reality towards fantasy

Impossibly high goals to fit in

Lack of adult guidance

Lack of family support for individual tasks undertaken

Having narrow mindset of future possibities

The title is a bit confusing.  Is it society that has an uncertain identity or is it the individuals within a society that may have uncertain identities or is it a specific individual's uncertain identity within the society?  It would appear easier to discuss an individual's uncertain identity and the possible causes.  Is it in relation to the family, work environment, community, church, or social groups?  If discussing a more global society topic, then to what extent are you defining society?  Town, city, State, National?  You could hypothesize that melting pots create uncertainty within a society's identity.  Or that mixed marriages result in children with confused identity.  etc.
