As i drive, i notice that as i slow down my engine starts to actually rattle. Can this be a loose s***w? Or maybe my engine is choking?

Either way, what can cause an engine to shake in that way?

  1. that rattle can be from a heat shield on the catalytic converter that has broken loose, but that would not cause the shaky engine. that could be a sign of so many different things, like a lack of a tune up or injectors that are plugging up.

  2. You mean causes. The symptom is the shaking. Most likely, one or more cylinders is misfiring. Could be spark plugs, wires, a lot of things. You're not going to be able to fix it yourself so take it to the shop. It shouldn't take more than an hour to figure out. Probably less. You're probably wasting a lot of fuel and emitting a lot of extra pollution.

  3. ur engine mounts are bad...

  4. Literally rattle, like a piece of metal in a can?  Perhaps you've got something that isn't as secure on the engine as it ought to be, like the air filter housing.  Pop the hood and take a look at that.

Also while you've got the hood up, listen carefully and be sure your engine is firing on all cylinders.  If it's missing one (or more!) that could cause some really violent vibration at lower revs.
