Whether if youve just been browsing through petfinder.com or been to local shelters what breeds are most common at shelters near you?

I live in Mass and of course theres lots of labs and pits but theres also loads of boxers, boston terriers, and pugs.

Just trying to see if theres a trend in certain parts of the country.

What area do you live in ? (optional )

What breeds are most common?

  1. We have tons of Border collies, Australian Shepherds, Pit Bulls, and mixes thereof in shelters around here (Montana).  There are very, very, very few small dogs of any breed found in shelters here.

  2. Am. Staffs (Pit Bulls) and lab/ lab mixes are basically always going to be found at shelters. As well as working breeds (border collies, australian shephards/ cattle dogs. This is because a lot of really stupid people get Pit bulls to have a tough/guard dog, but then again (because they're so retarded) have No clue how to take care of dog, and they get put on the street or taken to a shelter. Working/herding breeds as well as lab mixes are always prevalent because they are Working dogs with high energy. They don't make good dogs for the average person because the average person doesn't understand the amount of time you need to exercise and mentally stimulate these dogs in order to keep them from getting bored and acting out. Herding dogs especially are a horribly choice because they are designed to work hard from dawn to dusk, so if you just stick them in a house/apt. all day they'll go crazy.

But of course, at any given time there will usually be a lot of one particular breed from a recent raid. This usually happens with pit breeders or small dog breeders (breeders HAha....Puppy mills).

  3. Pekinese, Shih-tzu, Pugs, Pit Bulls, Labs.

    I live in Northeast Arkansas.

  4. I live in nj and where I live 90%-95% are pitbulls at the shelter near me. The least would probably be smaller fluffier dogs I always check petfinder and they never have small breeds

  5. I live in NC and the most common dogs in shelters are labs, labs, and more labs. Pit bulls, terriers, and hounds are common also.

Small dogs are usually the least common animals in shelters. People tend to hold on to smaller dogs.

  6. Labs, pitties, coonhounds, airedales, a lot of purebreds like brittany spaniels, portuguese water dogs, field spaniels, pointing griffons, saint bernards, rhodesian ridgebacks. Purebreds are more common than mixes here. Owner surrenders much more common than strays as well.

A german shepherd or mix thereof is a harder breed to find, but you'd think would be common. There is a gsd rescue nearby that pulls any shepherds from the shelter, but they aren't often full.

    I live in eastern WI

  7. Lab & Pit bulls, mainly.

  8. pit bull and pitt bull mixes Its sooo sad we live in wisconsin the southern end and we rarely see little dogs like maltese shitzu ect...

  9. I live in NE Pennsylvania and the most common dogs seen, along with the mixes of them are: Pitt Bulls, Labs, German Shepards, Rottweilers, and chows. The least common or never seen ones are like dalmations, terriers.

  10. larger breeds as most landlords don't permit dogs in 90% of cases.

    I live in australia

    Dobermans

  11. Last I checked with our local humane society, there seemed to be a lot of lab mixes.

  12. purebreds or mixes of  hounds, shepherds, labs, huskies, beagles, terriers, spaniels and pits.

    I live in Ohio

You almost never see a hairless breed in a shelter

  13. I live in Knoxville, Tennessee.

I usually see Pill Bulls in shelters, simply because they are extremly over bred here. Another popular one is Labs, because people don't know how to handle/train them. Goldens are high up there aswell along with Beagles and hounds.

Lots of people have Jack Russell Terriers and Yorkies here. Just in my apt. building we have 6 JRT's and 9 Yorkies.

I never see small dogs in our shelters, always big dogs. I never see Pugs here either, as I'm probably the only person in our entire city that owns one. (LOL, Well, maybe not but they are VERY rare here)

  14. I'm in NE Texas - We see ALOT of Labs and Pits.....

Never see dogs like Afghan Hounds....LOL

  15. Mid SC - A lot of Labrador Retrievers in.

    Don't see purebred Dachshunds

  16. Lots of German Shepherds, pit bulls, beagles, labs, huskies, hounds. But most of them are mixed breeds and only part beagle, lab, etc.

I rarely see yorkies, chihuahuas, goldens, or any rare/uncommon dogs. I live in Ontario, Canada tho, not the USA but it seems like some breeds are common in many parts of North America...

    :)

  17. Labs, Lab mixes, Goldens, Golden mixes, poodles min pins and doxies and the usual run of other mutts and shepherds
