  1. It would depend on the IEP.  Every student on an IEP has a disability, which makes them eligible to receive that IEP.  The IEP will say what accommodations and modifications and where that student will receive their instruction.  If the IEP determined the student is mainstreamed (inclusioned) or in a regular education classroom, the IEP would address any special needs that student would have to receive FAPE (Free Appropriate Public Education).

  2. There are many ways you can prepare yourself and your classroom for a student with special needs.

Start with the IEP. Don’t just read the accommodations you want to read the goals and objects and the PLEP.  Reading the whole IEP will give you snap shot of the child from people that have worked with him/her.

Talk to the teacher or teachers that are supporting the student now.

If the student receives related services (Speech, Occupational therapy or physical therapy) talk to the therapist. Ask them about tricks or things you can change in your classroom that may make it easier for this student to work in your classroom.

Talk to the parents. Have open communication with the parents. If the parents know you have open communication, most of the parents will do everything in their power to help you with problems, support their child’s academics and so much more.

If the student has a physical disability you want to remove physical barriers in the classroom.  You want the student to be able to navigate through the whole classroom without tripping, knocking into things or always asking for help.

If the student is high distractible, you want to create an environment that decreases the visual and auditory distractions.

You want to set up your room so that seeing the board is great for everyone. And you want to position the student where most of the writing appears.

Disability awareness is important especially if there is no other student in your classroom that has a disability. You want to approach the topic so you don’t just talk about this one students disability but disabilities as an overall then maybe having the students parent talk about some things that might help his/her child.
