What are the pro's and con's of music at work?

My work does not allow music, not even a low volume P.A. type music. We run a lot of loud CNC type machines, and with the long run cycles, I see no reason to ban music, it's not even like we would fight over what kind, just any would be nice.

Loud machines tend to make distinct sounds when they are malfunctioning.  If other sounds, such as music with a repetitive beat, are emanating from personal audio players, these distinct warning signs may not be discerned in time to prevent an accident.

And, a PA system may cause the same effect.

If I'm not mistaken research shows that a work place that allows music is a more productive.  I think if your bosses did any research on this they would find it to be true
