My Girlfriend has a bunch of medical bills that she needs to get reimbursed for from her new insurance company. What are the general steps to doing so? Thanks.

  1. call the insurance company (or go online) and get copies of their claim form, with instructions.

Follow the instructions carefully.  This may require going back to the providers for additional paper or signatures.

    Make copies of EVERYTHING.

Send it in according to the instructions.  Follow up by phone and in writing if you don't hear back promptly.

  2. The best way to handle this is to have the providers bill the insurance directly. Their billing will have all the info necessary for reimbursement.

If she paid them directly, their billing will reflect that. She may receive partial payment from the insurance company and partial payment from the provider if they are within her network for a discounted rate.

  3. She needs to call the insurance company and ask them to send her a member submitted claim form. They will process the claim according to her benefits..meaning the services may not be paid/or may not be paid in full if the providers are out of network or not eligible medical providers. She should call them to make sure the services are eligible before she wastes her time submitting a claim. Make sure when you do submit the claim, you only send them copies of everything, keep the originals for yourself.
