What are the pros AND cons of environmental holdays?

Question

How do they compare to a typical package holiday when it comes to things like social, environmental an economic impact? Any links to helpful websites or holiday companies would be appreciated.

pro:

1) You can have a holiday that is different from the normal, really braking your "routine" (what holidays are about)

2) Less mileage to get to where you are going (less time in car/plane = more time relaxing)

3) Learn about area / support local tourism. Generally if you don't travel you will stay within your country so there's the opportunity to learn as well as support economy

con:

1) You don't necessarily get to go where YOU wanted to go.

2) Holiday can be just as expensive but without the exotic feel.

3) Generally not as well travelled because of decision.
