  1. Pros light weight aluminum

Cons fatigue fractures in the aluminum

  2. i know that the tail wing of a plane fell off a jet New York in 2001 (October of 2001, soon after 9-11).  The plane of course fell from the sky and killed hundreds of people.

They make more and more parts out of "composite" material, which may seem stronger, but its fatigue characteristics are still not well known.  Until they are better known, more people will surely die.

  3. Excellent question!!!

Im not sure its one that I know the answer to!

Due to technological developments, I would say modern wings have almost no flaws, as they are currently the best of what we can come up with.

The only problem I can see, is that airplanes are increasing in size which means the wing area required to lift the mass is larger, and larger, putting more stress on the wings.

  4. On commercial aircraft the "winglets" to reduce tip stall which is a plus. On modern fighter aircraft the wings are aerodynamically quite poor but rely on computers to sort things out with the advantage of manoeverability that wouldn't be possible otherwise.

  5. theyre lighter and more efficient, cost less to make.
