  1. Your last respondent says "Engineering is one of the most respected profession in the world ... "

That is true in many parts of the world, sadly it isn't in the U.K.

While industry is crying out for young people to enter the sciences and engineering our pathetic school system is letting the country down.  They are churning out thousands of virtually useless young citizens.

In addition, British society has always looked down its nose at engineering and anything connected with it.  It isn't polite, or "U".  An engineer is, in many eyes, just another artisan.

  2. Sadly, what the guy above says is absolutely true. I was a UK trained engineer, and I emigrated to Southern California for that exact reason. I discovered that my engineering training was, in fact, superior to that given to American engineers.

I was happily surprised at what a respected member of society I had suddenly become. After years of people looking down their nose at me, suddenly I was on the top of the heap! Just one example - I needed to get a credit card even though I had no credit history in the USA. I talked to the bank manager, and, as soon as I mentioned that I was an engineer, NO PROBLEM!

It is no conicidence that the USA is a superpower! Back in the day of I.K. Brunel, one of the greatest British engineers, Britain was a superpower!

  3. A more diverse workplace.

Men and women have been proven to think differently so potentially it could enhance productivity or creativity.

    No cons really.

  4. well, absolutely nothing. if you think men and women are equal then there are no pros and cons, they would be the same for a man working as an engineer.

I don't think mechanical engineers lug heavy loads, mining engineers dig up the ground with their hands or power engineers climb up high tension power lines using ropes, so if you are worried about physical exertion then don't fret. We are in the 21'st century with a lot of automation at the work place. You should however feel excited when you do get the chance to roll up your sleeves and do some dirty job yourself.

If you are worried about sexual/gender discrimination then you should be worried about the pros and cons of the region where you live or plan to work rather than the job itself

Engineering is one of the most respected profession in the world you show me an engineer who is not proud of what he does and i will show a person who's not an engineer at heart.
