  1. When I was 2 1/2 years old my mother signed me up for dancing school. It was the best thing she could have done.

I gained confidence because I could go in front of people and not be afraid to "perform."

I learned about balance by using my body and learning new motions.

Memorization skills because I had to learn the steps.

Social skills by getting involved and making friends.

Cognition for having to remember and learn everything.

I did dancing school for 5 years and moved on to gymnastics, then cheerleading which required both my dancing and gymnastic skills.

The cons may be that if your child has a fear of being in the public eye that they may not want to participate. You have to have your child aware that if you are going to pay for dance classes that they should try to stick it out until the end.

Cost can play a factor, because it's the lessons and the costumes and whatever else they need.

  2. I dont care if it is dance, karate etc...the child has an attention span and that is usually as far as you will go without frustration. We sometimes think they are miniature adults...

Pros: they get exercise, discipline, learn follow through, routine.

Cons: Costs...uniforms, outfits, lessons...I learned a lot through Girl Scouts

Why not have preschool get in different instructors and spend some time showing the mothers how to...dance, karate, etc for the meetings or work with the kids (volunteer) for a short time in the morning/afternoon?  Kids love to show what they can do or what they learned...
