What are the pros and cons of decrease oil depndence?

I Need to know every pro and con for the decrease of oil dependence?

I guess a pro is that if traffic and industry depend less on oil, the rest of Earth's oil reserves can be used for more important stuff, e.g. things where it isn't that easy to find a replacement for it (making plastics for example)

Pro: Less pollution to the earth.

Con: More energy cost in the short runs. Need time to replace any machine that runs on oil...

For starters,less dependence would allow North America to satisfy it's own needs and not depend on the Middle East.Ever time some Arab in Iran farts the price of gas goes up.I don't see any cons of it.
