  1. Well I can tell you what the downsides to NOT smoking are....

1.Loss of a euphoric sense of happiness.

    2.Feelings of depression.

3.Food that taste good when you're high taste very different when you're sober.

4.Some things just won't seem as funny.

5.You won't be able to daydream as well or often.

    6.Yahoo Answers isn't as fun.

  2. Cut & pasted:

    Effects on the Heart

One study found that an abuser’s risk of heart attack more than quadruples in the first hour after smoking marijuana.7 The researchers suggest that such an outcome might occur from marijuana’s effects on blood pressure and heart rate (it increases both) and reduced oxygen-carrying capacity of blood.

    Effects on the Lungs

Numerous studies have shown marijuana smoke to contain carcinogens and to be an irritant to the lungs. In fact, marijuana smoke contains 50 to 70 percent more carcinogenic hydrocarbons than tobacco smoke. Marijuana users usually inhale more deeply and hold their breath longer than tobacco smokers do, which further increases the lungs’ exposure to carcinogenic smoke. Marijuana smokers show dysregulated growth of epithelial cells in their lung tissue, which could lead to cancer;8 however, a recent case-controlled study found no positive associations between marijuana use and lung, upper respiratory, or upper digestive tract cancers.9 Thus, the link between marijuana smoking and these cancers remains unsubstantiated at this time.

Nonetheless, marijuana smokers can have many of the same respiratory problems as tobacco smokers, such as daily cough and phlegm production, more frequent acute chest illness, a heightened risk of lung infections, and a greater tendency toward obstructed airways. A study of 450 individuals found that people who smoke marijuana frequently but do not smoke tobacco have more health problems and miss more days of work than nonsmokers.10 Many of the extra sick days among the marijuana smokers in the study were for respiratory illnesses.

    Effects on Daily Life

Research clearly demonstrates that marijuana has the potential to cause problems in daily life or make a person’s existing problems worse. In one study, heavy marijuana abusers reported that the drug impaired several important measures of life achievement including physical and mental health, cognitive abilities, social life, and career status.11 Several studies associate workers’ marijuana smoking with increased absences, tardiness, accidents, workers’ compensation claims, and job turnover.

  3. in a nutshell, your hormones such as ephinephrine surges like not other, and neurotransmitters that receive those hormones will eventually be destroyed...since it is toxic, it makes you want more of the drug to compensate. that's why ppl get hooked on it..and then there's the emotional downside after taking mj. I wouldn't do it.. plus it's illegal.

  4. I'm afraid I have to disagree that the gateway theory is false. If you become a regular user and hang out with other potheads, you're going to try harder drugs. I did and many of my friends did. And some who do that are going to become addicted, and some of those are going to hit bottom or die.

This I think isn't an effect of marijuana per se, but of the culture in which regular marijuana users tend to hang out. Nevertheless, it's real and from what I've seen the biggest risk from the use of marijuana, which is otherwise a fairly innocuous drug, less harmful and impairing than alcohol.

  5. mom of 2 the gateway theory is totally false  if anything alcohol is the gateway drug. and cigarettes and any type of other drug has a total different chemical makeup then cannabis so do not go that way. yes smoking anything is bad but chemical thc is very safe. honestly have not seen any downside every thing said by the gov was bs. the only down side is being a criminal while possessing it.

  6. over weight, temporary memory loss, over eating, destroys

    lung tissue, temporary sterile.

  7. It`s a gateway drug. If you think it`s OK to smoke pot. you`ll be ok with smoking cancer sticks (another name for cigarettes), or smoking crack, or taking pills.

Trust me I have many addicts around me.

Also lots of weed smokers I know are kind of slow, almost like they are turning mentally retarded.

Would you inhale fumes of a burning home, or the fumes of a barbecue? However you put it, you are inhaling fumes into your lungs. totally not cool!
