What are the qualifications of becoming a midwifery or a nursing student in the UK?

I am a non-British citizen and already in the UK. I wish to advance with a nursing degree or a midwifery degree in this country but what qualifications should I gain such as how long should I have been here before I begin with a course and how much and what college or university can offer the said courses the cheapest? Thanks a lot...
