  1. In wisconsin it's Police officer, sergeant or detective (same level) lieutenant, captain, deputy inspector, chief deputy inspector and then higher up stuff that I can't recall

  3. Depends where in the US you are in. Some closely follow the military.

  4. The ranks are determined by the agency. They can be a bit different, but the most common are:

    Patrolman

    Sergeant

    Lieutenant

    Captain

    Chief

    As far as detectives, on some agencies they are the same rank as a patrolman, they just have a different job description. On other agencies they are the same rank as sergeants. Larger agencies may have the same rank structure as above, they just put "detective" in front of the rank.
