The first thing is ignorance. Children are the worst victims as they are unaware about the danger and may touch the electric sockets, plugs etc.. We all have to be careful and educate people about it. To avoid fire accidents due to electric short circuit we must ensure that the wiring are in good condition. Further switch off the electrical appliances like heaters and ACs, while leaving the house.

There's an old saying with electricians, never touch anything electronic with both hands at the same time, no matter what. That keeps a shock from going through your heart.

When doing projects around the house, such as lamps, I always wear my wife's rubber gloves (of course after turning the power box off) that way even if I s***w up I probably won't be shocked.
