Question:

What are the reasons to use certified mail rather than delivery confirmation?

I sold some event tickets on eBay, and I'm trying to decide which to use.

Both of them provide information about the date and time of delivery. Certified mail provides proof of mailing, but why would I need that if I have delivery confirmation showing when the item was delivered?

Certified mail also provides a record kept at the post office. Wouldn't the delivery confirmation receipt I get when I mail the item serve the same function?

So far, I don't understand the real benefits of certified mail over delivery confirmation.

In case you want to read the exact descriptions from the USPS website, here they are:

Certified Mail provides proof of mailing at the time of mailing and date and time of delivery or attempted delivery. A delivery record is maintained by the USPS.

Delivery Confirmation service provides the mailer with information about the date and time an article was delivered and, if delivery was attempted but not successful, the date and time of the delivery attempt. No record is kept at the office of mailing.

  1. I believe a certified letter is signed for and the signature has to be the person it is addressed to....you can call the post office in your area and find out....Delivery confirmation sounds like the Delivery Person is signing on the dropping off of your stuff and not caring who gets it.

  2. Certified must be signed for by the addressee. Delivery confirmation is just that...it was delivered and nobody signs for it. I would suggest Certified.

  3. If you send by certified mail with a "return receipt", the person receiving the mail or package signs for it on the postcard that gets mailed back to you.  If some other member of his office or household signs for it, you will get their signiture on the postcard.  I would think that this would be stronger evidence that the item was received on the other end.  However, if no one is home, a notice will be left to pick up a certified letter at the post office.  I think they will also send a second notice if it is not picked up immediately.  When they get the item from the post office they must sign for it.  If they do not pick up the item, it will be returned to you.
