  1. It also prevents the attorney from being a witness against his client with respect to matters subject to confidentiality. Would make representation cumbersome or impossible if an attorney could be called upon to divulge confidences.


  2. It is so there is trust of the attorney by the client. Then the attorney can best represent the client if they have full facts.

  3. An attorney is more effective if they know the truth.  You can't effectively defend someone if all you know is what the Prosecution tells you.
