My parents have been away and I, as the oldest offspring (20), have been organising meals for my younger siblings, and rather well if I say so myself.

I had planned out the weeks dinners, ordered the food on-line, and was going to make Roast Beef and trimmings for when my parents get back tomorrow. However I know think the piece of meat I have (topside) is a little small.

850g is a bit on the light side for a family of 5 isn't it? It is boneless, but still. Especially considering the youngest is a 17 yr old boy, and my parents will have had a long drive home.

What do you think? Should I buy another joint and serve 2, or just make loads of veggies? Or turn the topside into something else?

How much meat would you normally recommend for 5 people?

  1. I would buy another one to be on the safe side.  Better to have left overs than not enough left.

Good for you.  Wish my 20 yr old could cook like that.

  2. to have a real hearty meal for 5 adults, a roast beef should be at least 6lbs before cooking.  i am sorry but do not know the metric conversion for that .  if your roast is not equal to that then may i suggest you make a hearty beef stew, or, buy a larger roast.  if you are potting the roast, then you must allow for shrinkage.   make sure to make a great dessert.
