It depends on what you're trying to do online. If you are playing a computer game like runscape, or any other online mmorpg, when you click sign up, they will tell you the requirments, such as your name and age (i normally don't trust that other people won't see this info, so i always lie about my name and address). For most of these you need to be at least 13 or older, at least for the good ones. If you want to play online for game on a wii or ps3, there will most probibly be an option on the game menu screen.

it almost always depends on the website. Most websites require you to fill out some general information (age, email, gender, etc.). some websites require you to pay to play. some websites let you play without having to have an account. I really like whyville and toontown, they're great websites for a wide range of ages.
