  1. pretty d**n low, Just using server 2003, you could use a sepron or even a pentium 4 with a lot of memory.

You need a server operating system.  Pre ms windows 2000 server you have primary and secondary domain controllers, ms windows 2000 server and newer, all domain controllers are equal.  for you to have a domain controller, the server must be part of a domain network, NOT a workgroup network (workroup network also called peer-to-peer or p2p).

    To run MS Server 2000 or 2003 you 512 MB of ram, but a good rule of thumb, providing you dont have large databses running is for every 5 nodes connected you need 1 gig of ram.  Server 2000 will run on a pentium 3,  server 2003 pentium 4.  2 single core processors work better then a single dual core processor.  Xenon processors work even better than pentiums.  2 dual core processors or 2 quad core processors are best choice today
