You should have a passport...even if you are travelling by LAND.  This is because you need parental permission to get a passport, so having the passport indicates you have parental permission to travel  you should also carry a letter signed by both parents and notarized, giving you permission to travel to Mexico. Technically, this is no longer required, but sometimes border guards are not aware of that.  You may not be asked for the letter, but it sure is better to have it.  Don't bring up the subject, but if asked, you will have it.  You can get a tourist card on the plane or at the border.
