What are the requirements for a visa to australia?

Here is my situation: A man and I are in love, but we don't want to marry although we will if it comes down to that for us to be together. I'm American, he's Australian. I don't have a lot of money, and I'll probably have $5000 in the bank when I do apply for the visa. Is that sufficient enough for a year or less there to get the Long Stay tourist visa? Anybody from there know more than this? Thanks.
