What are the requirements for teaching literacy to adults?

I am interested in one day teaching literacy to adults.

Is it necessary to have a standard teaching qualification (e.g. a PGCE) and experience of teaching at school level?

I am not particularly interested in teaching children or teenagers, just adults.

  1. Try getting in touch with your local Adult Continuing Education group, or the local College.  Maybe you could get in touch with the local library?  All of these groups could help you get further forward in your plan.  There are qualifications you need, but those groups could sponsor you towards that end.

If you are looking at this in the longer term, try calling the DEF and talking things through with them.  To teach adults, you'd need to get some qualifications - don't be discouraged: some areas need tutors so much they'd take you on first and help you gain them second!
