  1. In some parts of the world, (mostly highly developed countries), they are burning up resources such as oil faster than you could imagine.  These resources are not renewable so once they are gone, they're gone. The people who worry about it are not concerned with just the here and now. We are trying to make the world a better place for our children and their children.  If we keep using the world in ways that are not good to us or her, then we are going to cut ourselves short.  It is very important to change our ways now because time is running out.

  2. Environmental sustainability refers to the ability of the earth to accommodate the exponential growth in population that has occurred over the last  century. There exists, in an ecological sense, a "carrying capacity" in which the earth can only provide enough resources (food, water) to nourish the plants and animals that inhabit it. As humans use up a disproportionate amount of those resources related to all the organisms we share the earth with, our impact has caused us to reach a level which is dangerously close to this "carrying capacity." A UN report on global population growth sets a target date of 2100 in which there will be so many people on earth that the resources required to sustain their existence will be insufficient.

Perhaps it is helpful to envision an analogy:Your household has its own "carrying capacity." Your parents are limited in the amount of money they can make based on their education/job experience and can only support a limited number of children. Let's say, at two kids, the family does fine and is able to support themselves adequately. A third child comes along, and finances get tight so they cut back on unnecessary spending. The fourth child comes along, and the family can no longer afford to pay for basic necessities like food and shelter-your family has surpassed its "carrying capacity."

  3. If worriers have nothing to worry about they will manufacture something to worry about, or worry about why there is nothing to worry about.  Environmental stability is one such product, since no environment containing living things is sustainable although we can maintain the illusion of stability for a very long time.  Living things consume resources and output wastes.  Fortunately, on this planet, we have a plant-animal symbiosis wherein the waste of one is the resource of the other.  We do need to be concerned with some of humanity's wastes, and deal with them better because they poison both plant and animal, but in this endeavor, as well as others, an ounce of greed seems to accomplish more than tons of crusading.
