  1. Revenue collection. Police cars, ambulances, fire engines, hearses, the disabled - no problem. Raise your voice to one (especially in Westminster) and it is "racism" (the ideal 'card' to play.) There was an incident lately, involving an African Traffic Warden and a Middle Eastern motorist. The 'victim' got a parking ticket, to which he took serious exception. Followed the TW on foot, questioning his 'family tree' (and in no uncertain terms!)  All of a sudden the TW stops, and, pushes his 'tormentor' (ever so lightly.) The motorist dramatically drops to the floor, 'bellowing' like a 'wounded buffalo' at the same time. He then dials 999 on his 'mobile' and gives his 'location.' The Police attend, and, the TW gets arrested for assault. Ends up losing his job, and, the motorist has the PCN cancelled, and, is awarded 'compensation.' Not a bad result. Rumour has it that the sacked TW has since joined the Army, and, is serving, somewhere in the Middle East!!

  2. To enforce parking regulations. Be careful, though; in some areas, they are given full police powers, so don't p*i*s*s him off.

Places warning tags on vehicles subject to towing; arranges for towing of abandoned vehicles, vehicles with expired licenses, or illegally parked vehicles.

Issues citations for expired meters, improper use of specially designated or timed zones or lots, improper parking such as parking in crosswalks or other sidewalks, expired registration, improperly licensed vehicles, improperly parked motorcycles, parking in preferential areas, and related violations.

Operates computer equipment and two-way radio; marks vehicles to detect abuse of timed areas.

Completes data required for citations including but not limited to code sections violated, time, date and location of offense, vehicle license plate number and/or vehicle identification number.

Answers a wide variety of questions from the public regarding parking and related traffic laws, location of public buildings, parks, municipal facilities, and other points of interest; interacts with hostile and irate parking violators; responds to complaints from the public.

Maintains records of work performed and surveillance of long-term parking violations.

Completes declarations of citation circumstances to assist in prosecution of parking violations.

Notifies police of incidents involving abusive behavior by the public.

Signs off on correctable citations for registration and equipment violations.

Tags and/or reports malfunctioning parking meters, faded paint on curbs, vandalized signs, and other obstacles that may impede enforcement or hinder the public from understanding and obeying the law.

Checks operational condition of enforcement vehicles and performs routine operator maintenance such as filling gas tank, checking and adding oil, inflating tires, etc.

Reports malfunctioning enforcement vehicles and takes them to the Corporation Yard for service and repair.

  6. To ensure that people aren't illegally parked for the benefit of all road users.  I was parked in a disabled spot today (for which I have a badge) in a Sainsburys car park.  When I came out of the store to go home, some egotistical idiot with a big flash car had parked right across my egress route.  I had to limp back into the store to have him moved.  I think we should have them in car parks as well.
