Although I'm not a Muslim,but I'm able to answer your question because I have a lot of Muslim friends..In their religious beliefs,a man can got married to 4 womens,that's the maximum number..That's it..It's because in their beliefs,it is stated male species will decrease as planet earth getting improved..It is also because a man tends to have a lot of wealth through his masculinity and he have the rights to gives pleasure to womens..But with a rule..He must treat all his wives equally and without any tears in their life..

The origin reason was because there were so many wars in Muslim countries .. leaving villages of widows. In today's world .. these villages are still exists, the women are vulnerable because their sons and husbands are either kidnapped or killed and the women are raped. So in that case it's allowed for men to have more than 1 wife, as a protector and as to bring offspring. Muslim men can also marry additional wife if for example his wife is barren. In the religion itself, the rules of polygamy is complex: 1) the decision has to be blessed by the first wife 2) the husband has to act equally (which is almost impossible). But many Muslims also marry more than 1 wife for wrong reasons.
